What are Essential oils? Concentrated plant extract (what is left after a distillation process by steam, cold press, or water).
How do they work? Specialized nerve cells in nose detect smell and send impulses to the part of the brain (called the limbic system) that plays an essential role in mood, memory, emotions, and behavior. Smells can bring up memories and pleasure. Any scent can be good for depression if it is enjoyable to the individual.
Lavender is a floral scent known for its calming effects, and is popularly used at bedtime.
Frankincense is used for purification, and also has a focusing effect to help you feel less scattered.
Centering blend- lavender and frankincense. Add orange to uplift and center.
Bergamot has a calming and uplifting citrus scent.
Orange. All citrus scents are uplifting, so use them when you need that boost. Lemon, lime, grapefruit, and citronella are included in this category.
Uplifting blend- Bergamot and Orange.
Patchouli is an earthy scent that can help with feeling grounded.
Vetiver is also deep and earthy to help with feeling grounded. It smells like good dirt.
Grounded blend- mix patchouli and vetiver. Add frankincense to feel both centered and grounded.
How to Use:
Diffuse- There are many diffusers out there. Add approximately 5 drops in the water and diffuse for 15minutes or more.
Apply on Skin- Combine with a carrier oil or unscented cream. Carrier oils- olive oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, avocado oil. This dilutes the essential oil as they are so potent that they could irritate your skin.
Bath- Combine a few drops with about a half cup of Epsom salt then place in tub. The Epsom salt will help distribute the scent throughout the bath.
Simply Smell/Inhale- Open the lid and take a few deep breaths.
Ingest- I use the brand PURE which doesn’t test its products for ingestion so I personally cannot recommend ingestion.
