5 Bible Verses for Depression

God knew what struggles would come to us in this life when He had the Bible written for our instruction. We can go to it for all things; we can go to Him for all things, including depression. May these 5 verses help you as you go through depression. Write them on a sticky note and put them where you see them frequently like on a mirror or your computer. It may help to read them out loud.

While I fully believe there are chemical and circumstantial reasons for depression, I also believe there is a spiritual battle going on. We can take medications and go to therapy but we also must go into the spiritual realm:

1. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

-Ephesians 6:12

God tells us how to fight spiritually- with His word:

2. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

-Ephesians 6:17

These verses are our swords and by them we can have hope and win against the negative thoughts that enter our mind:

3. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me — put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

-Philippians 4:8-9

Remember that with Him, we CAN conquer depression and whatever symptoms may arise from it:

4. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

– Philippians 4:13

Finally, remember how worthy and valuable you are that He cares for YOU and every detail of YOUR life down to each tear:

5.You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.

-Psalm 56:8 

May these words refresh your mind and fill you with hope and peace. Read them multiple times. Hide them in your heart, speak them with your tounge, and feel them in your spirit.

Dear Lord,

Today I am (or my friend/family member) is struggling with depression. Come into my (his/her) mind to fight the spiritual battle that is occurring. Help us to remember your words and bring them into our battles. Thank you for the love you have for us. Forgive us when we forget how vast your love for us is. As this journey of depression unfolds, may the glory be yours as hope conquers all and endures forever.
